PFLAG NATIONAL: Glossary of Terms
The power of language to shape our perceptions of other people is immense. Precise use of terms in regards to gender and sexual orientation can have a significant impact on demystifying many of the misperceptions associated with these concepts. However, the vocabulary of both continues to evolve, and there is not universal agreement about the definitions of many terms. Here are some working definitions and examples of frequently used (and misused) terms as a starting point for dialogue and understanding.

Supporting Transgender Youth & Their Families Amidst Trans Sports Bans
Starting in 2020 with the passage of Idaho’s HB500, states in over half of the country have introduced, and several have passed, laws that would ban transgender women and girls from playing on school sports teams that correspond with their gender identity. While others have excellently explained the harms of these bills and provided detailed arguments to combat them, this document provides additional context as well as specific resources for transgender youth and their families who are distressed by these discriminatory bills and looking for support and ways to take action.

It Gets Better Project
The It Gets Better Project is a nonprofit organization with a mission to uplift, empower, and connect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth around the globe. Growing up isn’t easy, especially when you are trying to affirm and assert your sexual orientation and/or gender identity. It can be a challenging and isolating process – but, the good news is, no one has to do it alone. In 2010, Dan Savage and his partner, Terry Miller, uttered three words that would give rise to a global movement focused on empowerment of LGBTQ+ youth — it gets better. What began as a wildly successful social media campaign to provide hope and encouragement to young LGBTQ+ people has evolved into a major, multi-media platform offering over 70,000 personal video stories of LGBTQ individuals, along with our original content series.

A Father's Journey With His Transgender Daughter
Perhaps a common mistake we can make as parents of transgender children is to think that something must be fixed, that we need to say or do something to solve a problem. We might feel stuck in the mud when we see our children suffering and we aren’t able to help them in the way we think would be best. But the truth is, the only thing they want from us is our love and support.
In this episode, we talk about the journey of having a transgender child from a parent's perspective and how Jackie's experience with announcing her transition publicly made her a stronger person. In the last episode, Bridget shared her first reactions to Jackie coming out as transgender, and today you'll hear how Neal dealt with the news initially and what are, in his opinion, the things every parent should avoid. Tune in to hear Neal's internal battle between wanting to prevent his family from suffering and feeling powerless in the face of the unknown territory he stepped into.

In a World That is Wrong About Us | Vaughn Darst | TEDxUSC
Within the transgender community, the story of disordered eating is neither unusual nor remarkable. One recent study found that transgender and gender nonconforming youth are four times more likely to have an eating disorder than cisgender youth. The pressure to conform is immense for all young people, and it turns out this burden is dramatically compounded for transgender folks who want to control their body size and shape to meet the world’s expectations. Vaughn's TEDx talk illuminates the needs and challenges facing the young people of their community, in hopes of finding solutions to this complex issue at the intersection of gender, body image, food, and identity.
A New Children's Album Celebrates Kids Who Are Transgender And Nonbinary
A lot of summer camps had to close this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including Camp Aranu'tiq in New Hampshire, a camp for transgender and nonbinary children. Julie Be is a music therapist who has helped run the camp since it was founded in 2009 and also one half of the children's musical duo Ants on a Log, alongside Anya Rose. So the stuck-at-home campers would feel connected, Be and Rose put out an open call for songs that reflect the trans and nonbinary experience, use gender neutral pronouns or use humor to talk about gender. Together, they curated an album of children's music called Trans & Nonbinary Kids Mix.
The album hopes to connect with kids across a spectrum of ages: from elementary school up through early high school. Be says that older kids will hear the music in a more nuanced way, but that we need to give kids in the lower age range more credit, too. Read More

DISCLOSURE is an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender. DISCLOSURE shows audiences that decades-old stereotypes, memes, and tropes in the media both form and reflect our understanding of trans issues. They have shaped the cultural narrative about transgender people, and inform everything from dating and domestic violence, to school policy and national legislation. Since 80% of the population have never met a transgender person, all they know is rooted in media depictions, which are predominantly problematic and have rarely included participation by actual trans people. Disclosure is aimed at that 80%.
